Event Summary:

In distance education, the risks of failure can be quite high. Pressured by mounting institutional and public scrutiny, requirements from accrediting organizations, a desire to increase enrollment, and operate more effectively, online educators are looking for curricular alignment and student assessment strategies that truly measure learning outcomes. This workshop offers new insights into practical curriculum development, evaluation methodologies, and online assessment strategies institutions can implement into their own programs. Facilitators represent for-profit and non-profit institutions.

Online Workshop Description:

Introduction

Sloan-C announces an interactive online workshop focused on transformative curriculum development and assessment practices for online educators. In the virtual classroom environment, the potential gap between intended curricular outcomes and actual instruction/assessment widens, requiring that approaches to curriculum design become more articulate and aligned to a program or institution's learning goals. Further, when crafting an assessment, it is all too easy to take the path of least resistance; with many instructors relying on easily designed and administered assessment methods. In this workshop, Professor Jake Burdick, Curriculum Development Director, University of Phoenix; Dr. Jeremy Moreland, Associate Dean at the School of Advanced Studies, University of Phoenix; Dr. Jacqueline Moloney, Dean, Continuing Studies and Corporate Education, University of Massachusetts Lowell; and Dr. Steve Tello, Associate Director of Continuing Studies, Corporate and Distance Education. University of Massachusetts Lowell will take you through some non-traditional design and assessment models that you and your colleagues can employ when preparing, delivering, and evaluating your online courses.

During the workshop, you will have access to several fundamental presentations on curriculum development and assessment practices recorded in Macromedia Breeze, allowing you to see and hear the presentation as many times as you wish! You also will be provided with written publications on this topic. The discussion boards and live session will allow you to ask any questions you have of the presenters in both asynchronous and synchronous formats.

When learning about online transformative curriculum development and assessment and, it only makes sense to take this workshop in an affordable online format. No travel hassles, no planning around scheduled meeting times, just Sloan-C research and interaction at its best!

Using asynchronous collaboration software provided by Moodle.com and powerful synchronous collaboration software provided by Elluminate™, Sloan-C provides an innovative, collaborative format that caters to learners in a variety of ways.

Workshop Description

Welcome to the Sloan-C Online Workshop Series. The purpose of this workshop is to share knowledge about online assessment best practices among colleagues. A recorded presentation as well as several papers on the topic will be made available to watch at your convenience. At the end of the week (Thursday, February 15st), we will then hold a live synchronous question and answer online session with the presenters.

The session will discuss the issues addressed in the presentations and the presenters will take any follow-up questions you have on the workshop topics. YOU DO NOT NEED TO ATTEND THE LIVE SESSION!!! Some of us are more comfortable with posting asynchronously, while others enjoy the excitement of a live event, but both options are available in this workshop to give you the ability to choose. A parallel discussion will be held asynchronously from February 12th-16th with the presenters. The live session will be recorded, so we do recommend that if you don't attend it live, you watch the recorded version at some point during the following weeks.

Schedule:

February 7th-9th Activities: learn Moodle and Elluminate Live! and watch recorded presentations.

February 12th-16st Activities: Asynchronous discussions are held - begin posting questions and comments in the discussion forums.

Thursday, February 15st, 2PM (ET) - Live Synchronous Online Q&A Session (Online using Elluminate Live!): Professor Jake Burdick, Dr. Jeremy Moreland, Dr. Jacqueline Moloney, and Dr. Steve Tello. We will kick off the session with an open round of comments from presenters and then open the forum up for Q&A. We will finish with summary thoughts from the presenters. THE SESSION WILL BE RECORDED FOR LATER VIEWING AT YOUR CONVENIENCE!

Moodle: Sloan-C will use an open-source learning management system called Moodle to administer the asynchronous component of the workshop. Sloan-C has found Moodle to provide a flexible and user-friendly set of asynchronous collaboration and learning tools. As with most open-source technologies, the Moodle software is free, making it a very cost-effective software package for any institution or company. We have found though that low-cost does not mean that you have to sacrifice quality. Moodle still provides a robust environment that is dynamic, interactive, and provides cross-platform learner access through a standard web browser.
