Welcome to the Sloan-C Online Workshop Series on Podcasting.
Podcasting has had a revolutionary impact on formal and informal teaching and learning. Rising out of the advent of the Apple iPod, podcasts have grown into the mainstream of online media since their inception in early 2004. Just a year later, the New Oxford American Dictionary declared podcasting to be the "word of the year!" Podcasts are at the heart of the Web 2.0 revolution that prompted Time magazine's naming of "YOU" the "person of the year" for 2006.
The power of the individual to use podcasts to communicate globally has important implications for educators. Higher education professionals must learn how to harness the power of podcasting to reach an increasingly more tech savvy population of students and colleagues.
Learn all about podcasts and podcasting in this online workshop conducted by two of the pioneers in using this technology in higher education, Burks Oakley II and Ray Schroeder. The workshop will include:
- Introduction to podcasts
- How to aggregate podcasts for personal use and for display on web pages
- Step-by-step process of developing your own podcast with free online tools
- Promoting and advertising podcasts
- Enhanced podcasting - incorporating chapters, visuals and video
- iTunes University
- Zune and the future of podcasting
This workshop leverages the expertise of Sloan-C's effective practices and provides both a pedagogical, practical, and hands-on experience, enabling workshop participants to walk away with an online 'toolkit' for immediate application to their own online academic environment.
Faculty will explore actual examples of podcasting in several disciplines and from various institutions. Participants will learn how to create and deploy podcasts relevant to their own educational interests. The following faculty members and institutions will be sharing their expertise in this growing area of higher education:
Burks Oakley II, University of Illinois, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs
Ray Schroeder, University of Illinois, Professor Emeritus of Communication, Director of the Office of Technology-Enhanced Learning
Toward the end of the second workshop week, we will hold a live, web conferencing synchronous question and answer online session facilitated by Burks Oakly II and Ray Schroeder. The session will discuss the issues addressed in the activities and presentations. YOU DO NOT NEED TO ATTEND THE LIVE SESSION!!! Some of us are more comfortable with posting asynchronously, while others enjoy the excitement of a live event, but both options are available in this workshop. The live, web conferencing sessions will be recorded for your convenience. A parallel discussion and related activities will be conducted asynchronously with the facilitators in the workshop's discussion forums.
