Sloan-C Online Teaching Certificate Overview

The Sloan-C Online Teaching Certificate is offered as a sequence of three foundational courses and three electives leading from the conceptual to the implementation of online learning effectiveness best practices. The program's theoretical underpinning stems from Sloan-C's five pillars of quality in online education: student satisfaction, access, learning effectiveness, faculty satisfaction, and institutional cost effectiveness. Participants must commit to taking the first block of foundational courses together in a nine-week sequence.

Program Objectives

The program objectives enable participants to: 1) leverage their background and proficiencies as educators, administrators, and institutional leaders to become highly effective in the principles and practices of asynchronous instruction, 2) integrate Sloan-C, research-based, conceptual and theoretical foundations relating to learning theory and assessment to compliment and personalize their online classroom, and 3) capitalize on their potential as innovators in the field of online education by being challenged to create high quality work products which will be assessed by the program facilitators and their peers.
Program Benefits

  • Opportunity to work and learn with recognized experts in the field.
  • Actionable feedback for immediate application.
  • Enhancement of existing instructional design and planning strategies.
  • Collaboration with peers from a variety of institutions and disciplines.
  • Creation of personal online portfolio.

Course Sequence

The certificate is composed of 3 foundational courses and 3 elective courses. The foundational courses, taken together in a 9-week sequence, are:

  • Getting Started: Online Course Development Basics (3 Weeks)
  • Using the Quality Matters Rubric to Improve Your Online Course (3 Weeks)
  • Effective Practices Laboratory (9 Weeks concurrently with Getting Started, Using Quality Matters and 3 Elective Courses)
The 9-week sequence is an intensive, collaborative practicum. Participants will explore an array of actual courses and confer with course authors about effective practices. Building on lessons learned in the workshops "Getting Started: Online Course Development Basics" and "Using the Quality Matters Rubric to Improve Your Online Course," participants will build their online courses, giving and receiving peer reviews. Working in teams with mentors who will provide one-on-one coaching, participants will demonstrate their mastery of the basic elements of online courses: planning the course, understanding role adjustment, organizing the course, incorporating the advantages of online communications, and applying the pedagogical principles that create purposeful learning communities.

Program Electives
To further develop expertise certificate candidates will also select 3 electives from workshops that focus on specific faculty interests. Each elective workshop will require a 1 week time commitment. Total time = 3 weeks:

  • Transformative Curriculum Development and Assessment (1 Week)
  • Copyright Compliance for Online Educators (1 Week)
  • Workload Management Strategies for Online Educators (1 Week)
  • Dynamic Collaboration, Discussion and Facilitation (1 Week)
  • Moving the Laboratory Online (1 Week)
  • Blended Learning: Enhancing the Educational Experience (1 Week)
  • Expanding Access to Adult Literacy through Online Learning(1 Week)
  • Retention in Online Education(1 Week)
  • Learning Online 2.0: 20 Engaging, Interacting and Syndicating Applications (1 week)

Electives can be scheduled at any time throughout the calendar year, but must be completed within two years of certificate program enrollment.

A peer reviewed online course is an important outcome of the certificate. Another important outcome of the certificate is an online portfolio. Each of the elective workshops will also enable certificate candidates to build online Sloan-C portfolios that they can make available for promotion and tenure and hiring reviews.

Have you already taken one or more of the workshops mentioned above?  If you have completed any of the above workshops in 2006 you can apply them to your program credits.  How it works: The certificate fee of $1499 is a one-time fee to cover the cost of certification and support, as well as the Effective Practice Lab, a 9-week online course available exclusively to certificate applicants.  5 of the workshops mentioned above are necessary to complete the certificate.  Each of these 5 workshops is paid for separately based on the normal workshop rate ($295 regular or $145 for premium members).  If you have a Sloan-C College Pass, you can use your seat credits towards these workshops (so for College Pass Members, the cost of the certificate is only the $1499 and 5 already paid-for seat credits).  If you have already taken any of these workshops, all you have to do is submit a competency assessment (specific to each workshop). The assessment will be reviewed by our evaluation team, and if it is sufficient, that workshop will count towards your certificate workshop requirements and save you the time and cost of taking that workshop over again.

Program Facilitators
The program is facilitated by instructors from Sloan-C member institutions who are leaders in the respective disciplines. Collectively, the program facilitators have published numerous peer-reviewed articles pertaining to asynchronous learning, instructed in both asynchronous and synchronous learning environments, and developed effective online learning communities within their own institutions. Each workshop participant will be assigned a facilitator who will serve as a mentor throughout the first block of courses.

Technology Information

Sloan-C brings you the following technologies to provide an exciting experience during the certificate program workshops:

Elluminate™ Live! -- Elluminate’s powerful Live! software will take this workshop to a whole new level of interaction. Well suited for the classroom environment, Live! provides the flexibility our workshop needs, from a speaker delivering to hundreds of workshop participants, to multiple small discussion groups occurring in unison. Live! effectively delivers lecture-type speeches, while also having the ability to facilitate collaboration among many individuals. For more information about Elluminate™, please visit the Elluminate page in the Sloan-C Vendor Corner.

Moodle -- Sloan-C will use an open-source learning management system called Moodle to administer the asynchronous component of the workshop. Sloan-C has found Moodle to provide a flexible and user-friendly set of asynchronous collaboration and learning tools. As with most open-source technologies, the Moodle software is free, making it a very cost-effective software package for any institution or company. We have found though that low-cost does not mean that you have to sacrifice quality. Moodle still provides a robust environment that is dynamic, interactive, and provides cross-platform learner access through a standard web browser.

Attendance Pricing

$1,499/person This price covers the certificate fee and one of the foundational courses, the Effective Practices Lab, which is an exclusive 9- week course only available to certificate holders.
