This issue announces the Sloan Semester, a bridge for students whose studies were disrupted.

The Sloan Semester, an initiative unprecedented for the rapid, cooperative response of Sloan-C member institutions, is now open for enrollment to students affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. You can help in this effort by letting more students know they are eligible to sign up for these tuition-free courses. Courses in this accelerated semester begin October 10.

This issue provides news you can use:
  • Michael Hammond of the University of Warwick synthesizes recent journal articles and provides tips for the design and conduct of effective online discussions.
  • John Sener, Sloan-C Director of Special Initiatives, reports on the development of Quality Matters.
  • In “Distance in Learning: A Mixed Approach to Online Curriculum Development and Assessment,” professors Richard Schuttler and Jake Burdick propose an assessment model that combines qualitative and quantitative measures.
  • It's time to plan your attendance at the 11th ALN Conference: The Power of Online Learning: Mobilizing to Expand Community, in Orlando, Florida, November 17–19, 2005. Remember, premium members receive discounts on conference attendance.
  • At the conference, awards will be presented to representatives of the University of Central Florida, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, the University of Central Florida, and Mercy College (New York ).
