To the first issue
of the Sloan-C View, an online publication of
the Sloan Consortium.
The purpose of the Sloan Consortium
(Sloan-C) is to make education a part of everyday
life, accessible and affordable for anyone, anywhere,
at any time, in a wide variety of disciplines.
The intention of the
Sloan-C View is to provide you with useful information
about online learning, commentaries about the
field and pointers to more details about the
work of the Sloan Consortium. The Consortium
currently has approximately 175 active member
institutions, including colleges, universities,
consortia, and vendors. We are seeking new members;
details about how to join can be found on our
website: http://www.sloan-c.org.
Our Journal (Journal of Asynchronous Learning
Networks) can be found at http://www.aln.org.
Quality in online education,
as defined by the Sloan Consortium, rests on
5 pillars: learning effectiveness, cost effectiveness,
student satisfaction, faculty satisfaction and
access. The Sloan Consortium, sponsored by the
Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, is actively engaged
in studying best practices, organizing knowledge
about online education and promulgating information
about studies that use the five pillars as a
set of basic metrics.
In this first issue,
we feature an article by Kimberly Bonner and
Kimberly Kelly, both of the University of Maryland
University College. The article is concerned
with intellectual property and what you should
know about this topic in the context of online
education. We hope that this article will bring
you new insights about intellectual property.
This online publication is our
first attempt to reach the membership and prospective
members in an on-going fashion. We plan to create materials
for administration, faculty and the consumer public
in a readable set of materials periodically. If you
know of others who might be interested in reading the
Sloan-C View, please let us know (janet.moore@sloan-c.org)
and we will add them to the list.
We hope that you will
enjoy the information we are providing and will
join us in our work of creating the very best
online learning experiences in the world.
Best Regards,
. for the Sloan Consortium
