Effective Practice Abstract/Summary
Abstract/Summary of Effective Practice:

Online learning makes integrating student services and resources into courses much easier than with traditional place-based methods. The University of Phoenix's Student Resource Page allows one-click access to many student services and resources from online courses, providing one example of how these can be seamlessly meshed in an online learning environment.

Description of the Effective Practice
Description of the Effective Practice:

How this practice supports access:
University of Phoenix (UOP) provides each student with a personalized web page that allows one-click access to all of the support services provided by the university. The UOP Student Resource Page allows students to access a variety of student services and resources directly from course pages. Students can:

  • Look at their course schedule and review grades for each course
  • Access UOP's online library which provides access to full text articles from many different journals
  • Access a writing lab with a variety of resources including tutorials, guides, and e-mail access to a "grammar expert"
  • Do a variety of self-assessments including proficiency, prior learning, basic math and English skills, and critical thinking skills
  • Check on their GPA,
  • Order a transcript

Evidence of Effectiveness:

A demonstration of the UOP Student Resource Page at the 9th annual Sloan-C conference suggests that the UOP SRP provides course-integrated access to student support services that is still relatively rare in online courses.

More specific effectiveness evidence is not available at this time.

Other Comments:

An improvement to would be to have more student services (e.g., library, assessment center) directly available (i.e., 1 or 2 clicks) from every course page. [-- js, 11/24/03]
