Welcome to the Emerging Technology Group - Introductions

by Keith Bourne

Hello everyone!  Phil Ice will be facilitating this group, and I volunteered to help facilitate a subgroup focused on Personal Learning Environments.  I wanted to go ahead and introduce myself and tell you a little bit about my interests in this area.  Please introduce yourself as well!

My name is Keith Bourne.  I recently left Sloan-C, where I was the operations officer and marketing director for the past several years.  I am still very much involved in the Sloan-C community, but I am also running a small marketing services company that focuses on student enrollment and outreach.  So my world is all about connecting students with institutions in meaningful and effective ways.  While my "day job" focuses on the initial interactions with students, my interests are in the entire student experience and that is really what I've followed for all of these years that I've been involved with Sloan-C and even prior.  I have been following many of the technology trends that enable this to happen, not just from a marketing standpoint, but from all of the perspectives I've become familiar with while at Sloan-C, including the broader perspective on the entire process of becoming a student, how to learn and teach effectively in these environments, the challenges for institutions to serve and retain those students, and the challenges of keeping in touch with those students once they have left the program.  I am particularly interested in Personal Learning Environments and their potential for improving the student experience and learning outcomes all the way from being recruited to becoming an alumnus and beyond.  I've volunteered to help lead discussions on this topic as sort of a subgroup of the emerging technology group, so I hope to have some engaging discussions with all of you about this and other high potential applications.

“Emerging Technologies”

“Emerging Technologies” is pretty self-defining. But the ongoing promise of new ideas and creative solutions for learning is what keeps us, as educators, going.

Introduction

Hi every body! I'm Mahdi Sahebnasagh. I have been working on how to develop the applications of new Information Technology in the society of Iran (where I'm living) for more than 7 years. And my main area of interest is applying IT in education or simply e-Learning. I was a member of Iran's NICTA (National ICT Agenda) 6 years ago. I also was e-Learning manger of one of the Iranian universities, Shahid Beheshti University (http://en.sbu.ac.ir/), for the previous 2 years and now I'm making research in this field. I hope to have this chance to complete my education in this area in Ph.D. level. At that time in SBU, we obtained very good experiences via the first e-Learning course that we established and started there. We involved in LMS selection, customization and usage, content development, supporting online education and performing online classes. I'll be glad to hear and know about others experiences and also like to give any details about what I've learned.

eLearning in the Middle East and Gulf Region

Greetings Mahdi (and everyone if this is going out on the list). We are starting a distance learning program based in the United Arab Emirates (open to all) and I would be very interested in connecting with you about some of the issues or lessons you have learned about eLearning in your region. The program starts in March and I would like to get your feedback on some of our plans with technology. Warm regards, Patrick Connell Patrick Connell Senior Instructional Technologist Tufts University

I will be happy if I can help

Dear Patrick It's great that you're starting a distance learning program based on ICT and I'm sure that gives you the opportunity to develop your educational services more quickly and with the highest quality than you can imagine. During our experience, we customized and took advantage of "open source" programs such as Moodle as the learning management system. We also experienced a new content development and production method. We followed a layered content model which helped us a lot to communicate effectively with professors (who haven't taught in virtual environment before). These days I'm trying to publish the results in the form of a paper, but I can explain everything for you, if you are interested in. You can view some of content modules here: (but most of them are in Farsi) http://lms.sbu.ac.ir/ (Click on "???? ?????" on the right bottom of the page and then a list of courses will be shown. Click on any of course titles to view/ download its samples) As the bandwidth limitation was one of the biggest barriers in the way of making high quality multimedia content, we made a trade off (between quality and file size) to adapt with this limitation in Iran. I'll be glad to answer any questions. Please don't hesitate to ask in detail.

Introduction

Hello! I am a technology Support Analyst for the New college of interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University. Recently, online courses and degree programs have felt a push from upper administration who has set a goal to have 4,000 students in online degree programs by the fall, 2009 semester. I have supported the online environment since 1998 beginning with First Class and now using Blackboard. The faculty in my college are, for the most part, very set in their ways on teaching in the brick and mortar classroom, and use the online environment for posting syllabi and making announcements. Hopefully, being a part of this group will help me gain ideas of how to change that mindset. I look forward to sharing with all of you! Kathy

Introduction

I'm happy to find this forum and hope we can share information regarding emerging technologies. I'm a 20 year Veteran of the Information Revolution and am currently the Instructional Technology Coordinator for a private university. My struggle, not uncommon to others, is to not just "push" my institution towards integrating new technologies, but "pulling" my colleagues who are limited by time constraints. It very well could be the explosion of Personal Learning Environments will change the argument so dramatically, it will be moot.
