Con Edison partners with Stevens under Sloan grant in unique online training
"Analytic Capabilities for Business Improvement" tailored to Con Ed employees
HOBOKEN , N.J. - Spearheaded by a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the leading philanthropic supporter of online education, Consolidated Edison Company of New York - the source of power and light for more than three million New Yorkers - is partnering with the New Jersey-based university, Stevens Institute of Technology, to launch the first in a series of unique online training courses delivered to employees of the giant New York power company.
Stevens' renowned management faculty is collaborating with Con Edison executives to introduce an online training course tailored to match the company's business improvement plans. The custom course, "Analytic Capabilities for Business Improvement," offers Con Edison employees structured methods for decision making and business improvement processes.
"Online training is becoming a widely used and effective learning tool for our employees," said Randolph S. Price, vice president of Environment, Health and Safety at Con Edison. "We're very pleased to join with Stevens and the Sloan Foundation on this new initiative. Many Con Edison employees will benefit from the rich and innovative training these courses provide."
While the Sloan Foundation has awarded more than $55 million to universities over more than a dozen years to support online learning in academic settings, this Sloan grant is among the first given to a university to test the benefits of instructor-led, collaborative e-learning in industry. In the last several years, Sloan had awarded Stevens nearly $400,000 for online learning. By this fall, WebCampus will have enrolled more than 10,000 students in its online learning programs.
WebCampus, Stevens' award-winning online unit, launched the instructor-led, e-learning course to a pilot group of twenty Con Edison executives in February. Divided into six modules and delivered over a six-week period, the course is offered to senior ConEd employees who enter several virtual teams, conduct online discussions, and perform tailored course exercises. In late April, they will participate in team projects closely related to the company's current critical needs.
The collaboration between Stevens and Con Edison highlights the value of corporate-university alliances by integrating the company's practical, day-to-day operations with management theory and practice taught by Stevens industry-savvy faculty.
