Sloan Consortium Membership Reaches 500 Organizational Members
For Immediate Release
(Needham, Mass., Dec. 22, 2003) – The rapidly growing Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C), an association of academic institutions and organizations that share information about effective online learning, has reached over 500 organizational members. This milestone was achieved last month just prior to the Sloan-C 9th annual ALN conference held in Orlando, Florida. This high growth is an indication of the importance of the research that the Sloan-C produces and disseminates to its members.
"Membership in Sloan-C has been a blessing for Hampton University's B.A. degree in Religious Studies. The information shared among the Sloan-C members on a regular basis answered many of our difficult questions, helped us to avoid problems, and provided solutions that helped our program to operate more efficiently."
Calvin H. Sydnor III, D. Min., Hampton University
Director, Religious Studies Program
While Sloan-C activities began in 1993, institution membership didn’t begin until 2001, when 60 organizations came together as the Sloan Consortium. Today, membership registrations continue to increase past the 500 mark as the implications of online learning for the future of schools and corporations grows. Sloan-C continues to explore new ways in which it may further increase the value of membership, including the development of a purchasing help center, new research in the business of online education, and a premium level of membership that packages paid services into cost effective bundles. Sloan-C membership now includes well known distance education schools such as University of Maryland University Campus, University of Phoenix, and Pennsylvania State University World Campus, as well as training divisions from well known companies such as Xerox, Raytheon, Masco Corporation, Liberty Mutual, and American Express. Sloan-C’s International school presence continues to grow rapidly and includes two of the largest online schools in the world, Indira Gandhi National Open University in India with over 10 million students and Anadolu University in Turkey with almost 800,000 students.
Sloan-C is an association of institutions and organizations promoting online learning. The purpose is to help continually improve quality, scale, and breadth of online learning so that education will become a part of everyday life, accessible and affordable for anyone, anywhere, at any time, in a wide variety of disciplines. Membership is open to academic institutions, corporate training organizations, and organizations that support quality in higher education. Sloan-C is located at Babson and Olin Colleges.
